Lodging and Travel Information for Decatur/Atlanta

Please call us if you have any questions not answered below. You can reach us at 404-377-8033. Please note that all workshops take place at our Atlanta/Decatur location - see our maps page.

MudFire Clayworks and Pottery Studio is located in Decatur, Georgia, a small historic city just 5 miles from downtown/midtown Atlanta. Over the years Atlanta has basically expanded out and surrounded Decatur, which still maintains a nice small community feel but with the cultural amenities of a major metropolitan area.

For nearby lodging, we recommend the Courtyard by Marriott. It was completely re-done in February 2012 and is within walking distance of the shops, galleries, music venues and many restaurant choices of downtown Decatur. The hotel is a few short blocks from the "Decatur" subway stop. The subway, called MARTA in Atlanta, will get you to Hartsfield airport for around $2.50. The hotel also operates a free shuttle service that can take you to and from the workshop. 1-404-371-0204. Room rates vary, it is best to check published rates online and also call the hotel for the most current rate or use a service such as Orbitz.

We also recommend the very lovely University Inn with a hospitable B&B feel and a broader selection of accommodations ranging from singles to suites to furnished apartments rented by the week. The Inn is just a bit further away but in the midst of Emory University and within a 10 minute walk of many restaurants and shops. Their number is 1-800-654-8591, be sure to ask for the Emory discount rate and mention MudFire when making reservations. Prices range from $74-$125 typically depending on room type and season.

There are also nice Bed & Breakfast places nearby:

The Garden House, 135 Garden Lane, Decatur, GA 30030
404-377-3057
15 minute walk from Decatur Square. $90-95 per night (including tax) if staying for 2 nights or more.

If you prefer a full-service hotel and are willing to drive a little farther, there is a Courtyard by Mariott that is wedged in the middle of a ton of strip malls so you'll have plenty of restaraunt choices and movie theater in walking distrance. There is also a Holiday Inn in a similiar situation.

Diane Mahaffey, 25 Berkeley Rd, Avondale Estates, GA 30002
404-299-0862
$75 per night. Nice detached in-law suite in a quiet residential area very close by.

Pat & Dave Maddox, 34 Kensington Rd, Avondale Estates, GA
404-294-5458
$70 per night. Nice detached in-law suite in a quiet residential area very close by.

Miley Bright Farmhouse, Diana & Joe Simon, 3244 Covington Highway, Decatur, GA 30032, 404-508-6060. Several room choices including 2 bedroom suite with full kitchen. $99 per night.

The Cottage, Betsy Lamoureux, 1103 Walker Drive, Decatur, GA, 30030, 404-3544334. Deluxe suite with exercise room, kitchen, soaker tub, sitting room. $95 single, $115 double. Prefers cash or check, book online with credit card.

Please mention MudFire when booking.

If you choose to stay in downtown/midtown Atlanta just five miles away, many fine hotel and inn options are available. If you have any question about where to stay, please don't hesitate to give us a call.

There are some budget motels nearby. Please call us about the one you have in mind, some are OK and some are not-so-OK. Since we would rather avoid armies of not-so-OK budget motel lawyers, we're not naming names.

Using MARTA

MudFire is one mile from the MARTA rail system "Avondale" stop also called the "E7" stop. In good weather, it is a quick walk to the studio. Please be aware that while MARTA subway trains are a good choice for getting to and from Hartsfield Airport, the buses, sadly, are not a timely or reliable source of transportation within the city.

Driving Directions

For those of you driving in from out of town, we are located just inside inside I-285, convenient to I-85 and I-75, and I-20. Take the E. Ponce de Leon exit on the east side of the Perimeter. Please visit our maps page for Googlemaps driving directions. You may also download and print a PDF version of the map.
