Tina Gebhart

Tina Gebhart’s visual emphasis is on pure form and lyrical elegance. Glazing in white, with only slight surface crystallization shifts, emphasizes these aspects of the form, allowing light to decorate the pieces with shadow. She is interested in the visual repetition of forms, especially as subforms within a single pot. In particular Gebhart enjoys making teapots because they embrace the complexity of parts coming together as a whole.

Tina Gebhart Artist Statement

The power of the utilitarian pot is its accessibility to a broad range of viewers. Experience with even a basic commercial bowl informs the way the viewer-user will experience new ideas of a bowl. It may begin with a simple "This is different than any bowl I've seen", which can be the catalyst for a visual-experiential exploration. By containing both familiarity as well as difference, a new kind of bowl can encourage a new kind of noticing.

From the most intimate form (the Cup, in its contact with the user's mouth), to the most abstract form (the Vase, in its simple parameters of holding water and a flower), I wrap my visual interests around the constraints of each form's particular use.

My visual emphasis is on pure form and lyrical elegance. Glazing in white, with only slight surface crystallization shifts, emphasizes these aspects of the form, allowing light to decorate the pieces with shadow.

I am interested in the visual repeat of forms, especially as subforms within a single pot. The multitude of variations on components and their respective combination possibilities is endless. In making these pots, I set up one structure to compound a second structure, creating a double-order within the piece. I do this in both the profile of the pot and the layering of forming and alteration.

I work with indents as exo-skeletal forces that press the original profile into a new one, changing the swells of the clay. In the final form, both profiles exist simultaneously, defining the new form and creating points of visual emphasis and movement.
