Susan Beiner Workshop

Building Playfully From Parts - 2009

Susan Beiner leads a three day, hands-on workshop for constructing playful sculptural and functional forms. Susan's work references design and patterning within the hybridization of nature, and has been described as "high drama, illusion and grotesque floridity". This wide-ranging workshop will allow participants to experiment with a variety of techniques for deriving sculptural "parts", including slip-casting, mold-making, hand-building, and limited wheel throwing.

Participants will use these parts and a clay-joining "glue" to explore both sculptural and functional compositions. Participants should bring a small object (found or made) to use to make a slip-casting mold. Susan will teach the group how to cut and paste, bend and twist, and use wheel throwing and handbuilding to continue to develop their pieces. Conceptual focus points for the workshop will include hybridization, organic vs. synthetic, the use of excess, and ideas about scale and installation. Surface treatments and the role of color will also be discussed. This workshop is open to all levels.

Class size 18.

Susan Beiner Artist Statement

The most recent concerns in my work deal with making what is organic synthetic. In todays' world, most everything is manufactured of artificial materials. This extends to what was once all natural. Genetically altered foods, cloned animals and the hybridization of everything. Clay and ceramic materials for the most part are all derived from nature, elements that are naturally mined from the earth. This has lead me to want to use additional materials that are a result of an industrial process such as foam, plexi-glass and rubber. My use of excess has evolved to issues similar to those in urban sprawl - the sense of being surrounded by a manufactured and engineered environment.

My experience in China has lead me to be able to appropriate configurations of their landscape, merging what is real to what has become artificial. East and West finally merge as this piece named after my first visit to Huang Shan in 2005, is now being exhibited after my most recent visit, 2008.

My current work displays a shift to ideas about installation, covering an expanse of space. Installation allows me to reassemble shapes, attributes, qualities and quantities on a much larger scale suggesting an essential connection to our physical space. My interest is fueled by elements of layering, fragmentation, multiplication, juxtaposition and complication. Intense brilliant color reveals an obviously artificial man-made reality. Color is swirled together in rhythmic sequences mirroring the activities of a microscopic sample or aerial topography. The encrustation's are abstracted from real plant life, allowing the viewer to proceed into the interior pattern of a stylized manufactured plastic plant life. So as a viewer we are challenged by our own perceptions of what is authentic and what is not.
