Shadow May

Shadow May

Shadow May’s sculptural pottery blends a potter's way of thinking, exact temperatures, precise glaze recipe’s, etc. with a "let it ride", loose artist mentality. He believes that we only have one chance at this--at everything. He gives it his all, never holding back. He welcomes mistakes and struggles - it brings triumph and character. His forthright, solid, sculptural vessels proudly carry forth this life’s credo

About Shadow May

I've always been a creator. Building my first treefort or stacking rocks and wood together on the beach near my home. The ability to be a kid and explore the world around me set me on the path of artistic exploration. I found clay my fresman year of highschool. I wanted everything to be round and have the perfect glaze for the perfect pot. Very driven in the world of becoming a potter.

I've seen the shift from the need to control the clay to letting the clay take its form and be clay rather than the controlled nature one must have to be a production potter. The idea of blending a potters way of thinking, exact temperatures, dialed in glazes, etc with a "let it ride", loose artist mentality has been a huge need and challenge for me. I want my work to be spontaneus to the point of almost being a mistake. I just want to do it! Not think about it. Make work and be deliberate about it and the way I choose to integrate my life and surroundings into it...into each piece.

My family and my work are my life. Allowing the two to dwell with each other has been a challenge in itself but yields exceptional moments of triumph and love realized for the simple things. The work I make is a reflection of where I'm at in life. It may be functional, it may not. If I wanna make a mug I make a mug. If laboring over one piece that takes a week is what I want I do it. The gestural intergration of my life will always show its handmadeness in my work. The need to make work, to create for myself as well as others consumes me. I do it out of a need for self reflection, the simple need to have a balance in my life.
