Rimas VisGirda

Rimas VisGirda

Rimas VisGirda combines processes from industry and studio ceramics with his personal visual vocabulary to create innovative ceramic artwork. His compositions are heavily influenced by a Meissen charger from the mid 18th century, combining unrelated imagery for contrast and humor. He taught ceramics at colleges throughout the American Mid-west and West coast from 1973-1997, and now maintains a studio and raises his two boys.

Rimas VisGirda Artist Bio

Rimas VisGirda began his academic career in science, earning a degree in physics from California State University at Sacramento. He later received a Master of Arts in Art degree from the same university, and completed a Master of Fine Arts in ceramics and sculpture at Washington State University. He has exhibited his work, given workshops in ceramics, and lectured internationally. He is represented in over 30 public as well as numerous private collections. His work is pictured in many books on ceramics as well as periodicals in the field. He has taught at colleges and universities on the west coast and in the Midwest since 1973.

In 1988 he visited the Soviet Union as a guest of the USSR Union of Artists and has participated in a number of symposia in Eastern Europe during the ensuing years. These experiences have started to manifest themselves in his work.

He retired from full-time teaching in 1997 and currently resides in scenic Champaign, Illinois where he collects fortune-telling cups, is a home-dad for nine year old Tadas and six year old Jonas -and tries to maintain a studio.

Rimas VisGirda Artist Statement

I try to show that my work is a combination of man and material where both the person making the object and the material have equal significance. I exaggerate dents and imperfections when appropriate to the construction process, as in throwing or handbuilding. Lately I have been adding granite and decomposed granite to bleed out and further activate the surface of my pieces.

My work is influenced by my family, the culture I live in, the machine age, the urban environment, the media, and fad and fashion.

In my narrative pieces, I like the contrast of hand-drawn images vs the graphic (printed) quality of commercial open stock decals. My decal decorated pieces are influenced by Robert Arneson who pioneered the use of hobby materials (cone 05 glazes, overglazes and lusters) and Howard Kottler who pioneered the use of commercial decals fired onto commercial porcelain plates.

The imagery is often influenced by a Meissen charger, circa 1740-45, that depicts a juxtaposition of three completely unrelated subject matters, a central battle scene, surrounded with floral and insect images, capped by bucolic landscape and architecture vignettes around the rim. My work is a combination of commercial and handmade/handcolored decals attempting to capture the spirit found in the Meissen charger.
