Rick Berman Workshop

Take Your Raku To The Next Level - 2009

Rick Berman leads an intense two day raku firing session where participants learn to take their raku results to the next level. With almost 40 years of firing experience, Rick has achieved a magic touch with raku that is second to none. Rick will share specific decorating, firing, and post-firing techniques for getting the best possible result from each of several different raku glazes. Rick will demonstrate a variety of decorating techniques including the use of resists and brushwork for embellishing surface.

Participants will enjoy a fiery weekend of discussion, demonstrations, glazing, and of course....firing! The focus of the session will be on the specific techniques required for achieving optimal results for each glaze, including copper reds, Rick's turquoise, clear & green crackle, lusters, and more. Participants should bring questions, challenges, and examples of effects they would like to achieve (or avoid) for discussion. Rick will help build knowledge to assist with both troubleshooting and planning for optimum effects.

Participants should bring as many as fifteen small to medium sized platters please! Rick recommends bisque firing to at least cone 06 or cone 04, and using any white stoneware clay such as Standard 239 (or any other kind of raku clay), porcelain, B Mix cone 5 or 10, etc. Participants may also bring any glazes they would like to experiment with, though the studio will provide plenty of glaze for all.

Class size 18.

Rick Berman Artist Statement

I live a very simple life with as much order and as little chaos as is humanly possible with my particular gifts and shortcomings. My pots are not separate from my life. Firing techniques and glazes are minimal, and my Salku kilns look as if they were built by a cave man. The forms have always dealt with the cylinder, the ovoid, and the circle, and the infinite number of variations that are possible within these flexible boundaries. The pots are always about function; teapots, bottles, bowls, covered jars, and the like, but sometimes they go beyond tangible function and touch another realm of the human experience which is impossible to explain, but we could call intuition.

My surfaces range from a serene celadon on porcelain, to an intoxicating red to orange to lime green on a raku pot, to the crusty, drippy ash, barnacle like textures and earth tones of my Salku work. I push myself to add too and find new ways to use the information that I have accumulated over the years, and my goal is to maintain the same excitement and enthusiasm for the next kiln load of pots that I had at the very beginning of my clay life. I am extremely grateful for the many opportunities that the Universe has provided.
