Rick Berman Biography

Rick is a studio potter, workshop leader, and ceramic historian. He has served as associate editor of Clay Times and currently teaches ceramics and sculpture.

For 31 of the last 35 years, potter Rick Berman has been writing a book about indigenous pottery in India. In 1996 he made a film on Indian pottery and he is working on an 80-foot brick and tile wall for an Indian monastary.

In 2003, he curated the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia's "Clay" exhibit. Rick has taught at University of Georgia, West Georgia College, North Georgia College, and Georgia State University. Besides pottery, Rick enjoys playing the guitar and harmonica.

Rick Berman Artist Statement

It seems that I’ve always had the freedom (either real or imagined – if there’s a difference between the two), to make whatever I wanted to make at any given time in my career. My nature has always been to see something I like, figure out how to make it, get bored, and see something I like…” All of this has ended up as a career in what I humorously call “research and development.” Always being careful that my research never takes me down that road of working towards achieving some degree of commercial success, at the risk of losing my personal freedom.

To me success is loving the process of making things with your hands, loving to look at what you make with your eyes, and having a few people along the way that really dig what you’re doing. The universe continues to provide and I’m extremely grateful for all of the opportunities I’ve been given.
