Posey will spend two days demonstrating wheel-thrown and altered forms with majolica decoration. The workshop will emphasize a thoughtful approach to the construction of functional pots which combine wheel-thrown, altered, and handbuilt sections. Participants will learn a variety of altering techniques, including the creation of oval forms such as bakers, pitchers, and vases. Alternative approaches to attachments such as handles, spouts, and feet will also be explored.
Majolica refers to a fascinating glaze and decorating tradition that began in the Middle East in the 9th Century. Majolica has been extremely influential in the development of major Western ceramics movements since that time. Posey will talk about this history, and demonstrate a variety of majolica decorating techniques utilizing stains on a base majolica glaze. Participants also will learn about the technical aspects of working with majolica materials and receive handouts with recipes and other relevant information.

Posey Bacopoulos is a studio potter working in New York City. She has been making pots for more than twenty years. Her work has been shown in many national juries and invitational exhibitions. It has won awards in the Tenth Annual Strictly Functional Pottery National and the International Orton Cone Box Show. It has recently been published in several books including The Ceramic Design Book, The Best of Pottery 2, and The Art of Contemporary American Pottery. She has taught numerous workshops on majolica.
