Posey Bacopoulos Workshop

Thrown and Altered Majolica

Posey will spend two days demonstrating wheel-thrown and altered forms with majolica decoration. The workshop will emphasize a thoughtful approach to the construction of functional pots which combine wheel-thrown, altered, and handbuilt sections. Participants will learn a variety of altering techniques, including the creation of oval forms such as bakers, pitchers, and vases. Alternative approaches to attachments such as handles, spouts, and feet will also be explored.

Majolica refers to a fascinating glaze and decorating tradition that began in the Middle East in the 9th Century. Majolica has been extremely influential in the development of major Western ceramics movements since that time. Posey will talk about this history, and demonstrate a variety of majolica decorating techniques utilizing stains on a base majolica glaze. Participants also will learn about the technical aspects of working with majolica materials and receive handouts with recipes and other relevant information.
