Clay, Printmaking, and Raku - August 3-5, 2012

Paul Andrew Wandless teaches this three-day hands-on workshop combining printmaking techniques with ceramics and raku firing. Participants will learn various image transfer techniques for clay.

Paul will explain using core printmaking techniques, like screenprinting, monoprinting and relief printing, both onto plaster bats and directly onto clay slabs. He will also demonstrate how to put images into screens, carve linoleum and cut complex stencils. Participants will thus be enabled to make their own printing tools.

The workshop will include raku firing on the last day. Participants should bring two bisque-fired works to screen & stencil imagery onto prior to firing.

Paul will lead discussions on color theory, perspective, and principles of design to aid in the creation of well-executed compositions. The conceptual focus for these compositions is using printmaking techniqes to express a personal narrative.

Participants will treat their clay as canvasses while exploring the use of imagery, design, pattern, color and text. Multiple layers of information will be created using AMACO underglazes & glazes. All levels of experience are welcomed.

Paul Andrew Wandless Bio

Born in Miami, Florida and raised in Delaware, Paul Andrew Wandless currently lives and has his studio in Chicago, IL. His current body of work utilizes the figure/torso as a point of departure for visual narratives. Ceramic processes and printmaking techniques are combined to create clay prints, freestanding & wall mounted clay sculpture, mixed-media sculpture, prints, works on paper and paintings. The works are abstract expressive self-portraits reflecting concerns, beliefs and musings of his surroundings and day-to-day experiences. His custom glazes combined with commercial materials are applied in multiple layers with multiple firings to create rich surfaces. Texture, text and bold colors are used to add context and content to the narratives. Printmaking techniques used in his clay work include, screening, stenciling, monoprinting, lithography, linocuts and photopolymer plates. His clay work, prints, sculptures, paintings and drawings have been exhibited since 1995 and are collected privately and publicly.

As a writer, Wandless authored Image Transfer On Clay (Lark Books, 2006), co-authored Alternative Kilns & Firing Techniques (Lark Books, 2004) and is a contributing author in 4 other books. He is currently working on 500 Prints on Clay for Lark Books 500 Series for Fall 2012 release. He has written 19 published articles for several publications including Pottery Making Illustrated magazine and Graphic Impression, a quarterly journal for the Southern Graphics Council (SGC). The American Ceramic Society created the video Fundamentals of Screen Printing On Clay with Paul Andrew Wandless featuring his techniques in this area. As an independent curator, he has put together 18 exhibition and specializes with artists who utilize printmaking and clay processes to create work.

Wandless has given over 60 workshops regarding his art, techniques and research around the U.S. and Canada since 2000 . He also frequently lectures and sits on panel discussions for a wide range of art related topics as well. He has taught as a Professor since 1999 at different Universities while maintaining his studio work and activities. He is the recipient of the 2002 Distinguished Young Alumni Award from Minnesota State University, Mankato and the 2007 Outstanding Achievement Award from the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA).

Wandless currently serves on the Board of Directors and is Vice President of the Potters Council, a national organization supporting and promoting the ceramic arts. He also served on the Board of Directors for National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) as a Director-at-Large (2001- 2003), the Board of Directors for The Clay Studio of Philadelphia (2003-2006) and has been on the steering committee for the Philadelphia Sculptors since 2001. He was also the NCECA Presidential Appointee for the Demonstrating Artist Video Program as the Video Editor/DVD Creator (2003-2009).

He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Arizona State University ('99), a Master of Art degree from Minnesota State University-Mankato ('97) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from University of Delaware ('95).

Paul Andrew Wandless Artist Statement

Life experiences and responses/reactions to my everyday surroundings inform the content of my work. These external stimuli, combined with the internal stimuli of my general musings and curiosities form my personal philosophies of life, art and aesthetics. My accumulated observations and personalized philosophies then manifest themselves as narratives, anecdotes, allegories, myths and characters/personas. I utilize a variety of forms, vehicles and mediums along with diverse applications of art techniques and processes. The specific images, symbols, colors and materials in a work reflect the state of mind I'm in at that very moment of its composition and construction.

Clay and sculpture processes are combined with printmaking, painting and drawing techniques take full advantage of the potential of art and art making. Principles of design, perspective, color theory, philosophy and art history are also integrated, referenced and exploited. My visual vocabulary has no bounds as a result and allows for more aesthetically challenging compositions and narratives.

The clay prints tell stories or share insights with the viewer of my mythologized aesthetic and philosophy through created characters and personas. The sculptures, both the heads and figures, use the human form as a point of departure for fuller narratives. I utilize form and surface in general as canvasses to create a narrative or dialogue that is interconnected throughout my whole body of work.

I choose particular materials and images for the emotional, psychological, metaphorical, symbolic or iconic connotations they inherently posses. Surface, texture and color reflect mood and visually project the emotion. Multiple layers of color and imagery reflect the multiple layering of ideas and thoughts invested in a work and also produce personally coded content. Each phase in researching, composing, drawing, creating and finishing a work is equally important to the overall success of what I'm trying to accomplish. Much time and consideration is spent throughout my creative process on technical, conceptual and aesthetic concerns.

Ultimately, the work is meant to engage and inform the viewer both visually and intellectually from my point of view and filtered through my experiences. I hope to leave the viewer with something to think about or sense a commonality with what is being communicated through the images and forms. A transfer of a shared experience between me and the viewer with the artwork being the conduit or vehicle for this to occur.
