Gallery group show Pirates vs. Zombies, April 2012

Pamela Segers Artist Statement

The stories we are willing to share with one another give us our culture, its values, beliefs, goals, heritage, and traditions; binding us together into one cohesive society, allowing us to work together with a common purpose. Storytelling lives at the heart of human experience, which is as ancient as language itself. I am adopting a narrative/storytelling approach as I seek to illustrate my interpretation of Pirates vs. Zombies.

With my ceramics, I aim to grab the viewer's attention, drawing them in for a closer look, and then keeping them there with lots to study wherever they look in the piece. My ceramics usually is functional with a sculptural flair. Hopefully, there is a slow-hit of realization as the viewer moves in on the work and the initial read shifts or inverts. Hopefully, by the end of the viewing experience, the viewer has shared a level of emotional connection to the artwork; similar to that which I have experienced during the creative process.
