Mug Shots

Opened August 8, 2009

MudFire Gallery will host a large exhibition of our favorite and most useful drinking vessels, entitled "Mug*Shots" and featuring work by over 60 studio potters from all over the United States. This large invitational group show and sale will present a wild variety of form and surface, with up to ten works by each of the artists. The intimate scale of the works presented ensures that even collectors with a modest budget will be able to acquire stunning pieces by some of the nation's top clay artists. The scale, variety, level of work, and affordability will be unrivaled in a ceramics exhibit in Atlanta this year.

Mug*Shots will be on view at MudFire Gallery August 8 - September 26, 2009. The opening night reception will be held from 5-9 pm on Saturday, August 8, 2009. All works displayed will be available for purchase.

Images of individual works for this past exhibit are available in the video below.

More About Mug Shots

Cups, mugs, cordials, and other drinking vessels serve to nourish us, to wake us, to calm us, and to help us celebrate. They are beckoning forms that imply certain contents and thus emotional states. A drinking vessel may be abstractly inspected or energetically debated like other works of art, but it uniquely invites the viewer to share ones lips and thus engage in an act of utmost intimacy.

No wonder then the studied selection and careful criteria that a collector will apply in selecting just the right piece. MudFire's upcoming exhibit will offer a grand selection of drinking vessels gathered from around the nation to entertain, inspire, and delight even the most discriminating collector.

We invited over 60 artists ranging from promising emerging artists, such as Will Baker and Courtney Martin, to some of the top contemporary ceramic artists in the country, including Julia Galloway and Malcolm Davis.

Whether one thirsts for a soothing cup of tea, an energizing cup of coffee, a quick shot of exuberation, or simply a delightful journey through the range of clay's possibilities… Mug*Shots is sure to please the senses on a variety of levels.

Mug*Shots will feature over sixty artists, including:
