Michael Pfleghaar Artist Bio

Artist Michael Pfleghaar has made Grand Rapids, Michigan his home since 1983 and is best known for his colorful drawings, paintings and sculpture. His style is expressive and exaggerated, dealing with subjects ranging from modern still life, furniture, interior spaces and architecture. His paintings often portray inanimate objects with animate characteristics in their movement, shape and posture. Pfleghaar is extremely conscious of how objects relate to one another, choosing to create "visual conversations" through the composition of elements.

After graduating from Grand Valley State College in 1989 with a BFA in painting, Michael Pfleghaar has returned to school to pursue his Graduate degree in art. In 2011 Pfleghaar received his MFA in visual arts from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. An exhibition of thesis work will be on display at the Grand Rapids Art Museum titled "Reinforcing Objecthood" in February 2012.

"The threads that tie my paintings together are the compositional relationships of figure to ground. Mid-century modern decorative objects such as chairs and vases provide the beginning of my intuitive process of image making. While based in material references, the paintings depart from reality through the abstraction and reduction of the elements to a visually rich state beyond recognition," said Pfleghaar.

During his career, Michael Pfleghaar has received numerous awards and honors for his work, both nationally and regionally. In addition to his artwork being featured in Studio Visit, Metropolitan Home Magazine, Solace, and American Craft, Pfleghaar's pieces are in the permanent art collections including the Grand Rapids Art Museum, Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park, CDW Real Estate Investment, Steelcase., Neiman Marcus, Herman Miller, Orlando Magic Sports Complex and the State of Michigan Governor's Residence.
