Margaret Patterson

Margaret Patterson’s textured surfaces, corrugated and geometrically patterned, play a significant role in the composition of both her utilitarian and non-utilitarian work. For the texture she especially drawn to grids and parallel, or quasi-parallel lines. The combination of the glaze and the porcelain body, produce a luxuriously tactile experience.

Margaret Patterson Artist Statement

Porcelain is unique. It has a luminosity not found in any other clay. When thin, it is translucent but, whether thin or thick, light plays through walls of vessels giving them a treasured inner glow. I love the way glaze colors develop on porcelain; blues, greens, rich reds. But a classic ice blue celadon seems a perfect partner. My work, whether wheel-thrown or handbuilt, smooth or textured, seeks to make the most of the inherent, natural properties of porcelain.
