Jenny Mendes Workshop

Just Add Color! - June 8-10, 2012

Jenny Mendes will take us on a three-day trek through the imaginative use of color in ceramic surface decoration. Participants will learn to infuse a texturally rich and emotionally charged surface upon their work.

The class will create a variety of handbuilt surfaces to experiment with, from tiles to small object sketches. However, the focus of this workshop will be a playful dance with color and surface design experimentation. "I like the idea of both getting lost inside the surface of a piece, and the clarity it takes to find the way back out," explains Jenny.

Mendes will guide discussion of various colorful ways to approach the surface as a painter, by means of a palette of terra sigillatas, glaze, underglazes, washes, and oxides. She will present her "low tech" process of making terra sigillata, with emphasis on helping participants to develop a unique color palate of their own.

Jenny will lead the group in developing strategies for the self-discovery of meaningful subject matter by using intuition, series work, collaboration, storytelling, memory, dreams, pattern, and a non-technical perspective.

Class size 16.

She has exhibited her ceramic artwork nationally at prominent galleries, juried shows and SOFA. Since finishing a three-year residency at the Penland School of Crafts in 2007, she has completed additional short-term residencies in France, Slovenia, Macedonia, and the US. She currently resides in Ohio.

Jenny Mendes Artist Statement

I have always loved painting, and I especially like making small objects, with rich surfaces. Sometimes I get lost in pure pattern, other times I discover an evocative narrative, in any case I obsessively dive into the surface, to discover a story. It is especially satisfying to me, when someone makes a personal relationship with my work, connecting the narrative I have begun, with a meaningful archive of their own.
