Jennifer Martin

As a potter and educator, I enjoy sharing information and helping others along the journey of expressing artistic intention through clay. I feel my work celebrates tradition while not being inhibited by its vast history. Using the wheel as a tool I want to reveal the silky, sensual nature of clay as reflected by the touch of my hand.

I begin my approach to surface when the pot is being formed on the wheel, focusing on both the fluidity and strength of the clay through form. Little or no glaze is applies to the exterior surface of my pieces prior to firing, thus allowing the atmosphere inside the soda kiln to work its magic. The relationship between the richness of the surface and form with the effect of this type of firing produces irregular and rhythmic spotting and blushing on the forms. This harmonizing of form and soda create a movement and energy that inspire my investigation into the infinite number of variations that can occur while one is creating.
