Erin Furimsky Workshop

Bold Surfaces - February 8-10, 2013

Erin Furimsky teaches this three-day hands-on workshop which will explore creating complex surfaces with a low-tech approach. Participants will work with leather hard to bone dry clay. The group will experiment together to push the boundaries of familiar techniques and incorporating new processes in the pursuit of a dynamic layered surface.

Participants will discover strategies for creative expression through surface embellishment by incorporating texture, pattern, image, text, and color with the use of underglazes. The methods Erin teaches will transfer successfully to both pottery and sculpture. The class will be working on flat tiles or cylindrical forms to facilitate.

Intermittent demonstrations will be on slip trailing, stenciling, stamping, sgrafitto, and other low-tech image transfer techniques. Erin looks forward to sharing many little tricks about timing, tools, and materials in order to get the results you desire. In addition to the "how to" there will be discussions about how surface enhancements affect the content of your work.

Class size 16.

Erin Furimsky Bio

Erin Furimsky is a practicing studio artist in Normal, Illinois whose work focuses on the relationship of sculptural form with highly ornamented surfaces. She received a BFA from the Pennsylvania State University (1997) and an MFA from The Ohio State University (2002). Furimsky has exhibited her work nationally with inclusions of her work in international exhibitions in China and Taiwan. Since 1997 her work has been included in over seventy-five group and solo exhibitions, with reproductions of her ceramic work being featured in numerous books and catalogs. Critical reviews of Furimskys' work have appeared on several occasions in the journals Ceramics Monthly and Ceramics Art and Perception. In 2006 Furimsky was nominated and subsequently selected as an emerging artist by the National Council on Education of the Ceramic Arts. She has been the recipient of numerous artist residencies, including the Archie Bray Foundation, The Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts and the Oregon College of Art and Design. She is featured in a DVD called Layered Surfaces with Erin Furimsky.

As an educator Furimsky has been a featured presenter at national workshops, as well as serving as a visiting professor at Illinois State University and Heartland Community College, both in Normal, IL.

Erin Furimsky Artist Statement

I create ceramic sculptures that, at each stage, are swelled, carved, and painted meticulously. Elements of familiar domestic objects are extracted and reconstructed, allowing me to investigate not only their aesthetic qualities, but also their multiple symbolic functions within our lives.

Snippets and sections of ornament are removed from a more sensible and functional whole. These carefully considered fragments and layers accumulate organically across the surface of the piece. One might recognize floral motifs, snowflakes, microbes or calligraphy within the ambiguous multi-layered surfaces. Yet a sense of order remains, or re-establishes itself, as these embellishments are coupled with overlapping lines and areas of solid color.

My objects connect me to the fleeting present, an instant, with a sense of grounding gravity. Yet simultaneously they feel buoyant, as if they could float away, like time passing. I investigate where these two realms overlap, reflecting a liminal state, like the in-between I often feel in daily life.
