Healing
Oasis
Mar 21-30, 2003
Spring equinox Reception March 21 from 7-10 pm.
In the springtime spirit of renewal and blossoming, Deb Gordon of Atlanta will be exhibiting new ceramics work at the MudFire Gallery from March 21-30. The show runs a bit short because each work will include exotic plantings, and MudFire owners Erik and Luba are exceptionally skilled at killing plants left in their care for too long!
Come celebrate the spring equinox with us at the opening artists reception on Friday March 21st from 7-10pm.
The "Healing Oasis" exhibit at MudFire brings you the latest work by Atlanta artist Deb Gordon. For ten days, this body of work transforms the MudFire Gallery into a mystical oasis charged with healing energy. Each piece in the show is a combination of a unique handmade vessel graced with exotic plantings specially flown in from the West coast. These oases are created to be placed in environments where one could rest for a moment and breathe, meditate, or otherwise connect with live energy in order to be replenished and sustained.
Deb Gordon has spent her entire lifetime exploring artistic expression. Early in her career her focus was on photographic processes, both in her own personal artistic expression, as well as the commercial side of the arts. After a complete redirection of her spirit and energies in 1991, her work became oriented towards the pursuit of deep self-discovery and the expression of the authentic self. Clay allows her to express through a tangible medium what her hands express in energy during transformational body-work. Deb is a local energy healer and her ceramic work is infused with a wonderful energy, spirituality and playfulness Her recent work is very diverse including spirit temples, rattle-dolls, abstract sculptural works, lidded boxes, platters and vases.
"Creative expression in clay requires surrender, trust, and detachment. In the process of transformation by fire, each piece is ultimately made stronger or destroyed by its own hidden strengths and weaknesses. Those that come through whole are all the more precious and beautiful for this victory."
Deb studied photography and image production at both the University of Alabama in Birmingham and the School for Communication Arts. She has participated in ceramics workshops throughout the Southeast, and studied locally with well-known Atlanta artists Carol Brull, Ken Horvath, Becky Freeman, and Sandra Nissen. She utilizes both wheel and handbuilding techniques in her work.
Commenting on the Healing Oasis show, Deb states "It is my wish that you receive the blessings of sustenance, peace, hope and calmness from your experience of this work."
