Pure Function by Bryan Hopkins
September 10, 2011
MudFire welcomes Bryan Hopkins for a solo show entitled "Light & Shadow." Bryan works inventively with thin translucent porcelain utilizing texture to manipulate translucency.
We'll kick off the exhibit with a celebration on September 10, 2011 from 5:00 - 9:00 pm. Also opening that night is a solo show for Nicholas Bivins.
Work will post in preview mode by Labor Day weekend, and will be available for purchase starting 10:00 am on Saturday, September 10, 2011.

More About Pure Function by Bryan Hopkins
Bryan Hopkins takes porcelain to the limit, carving into already thin vessel walls to create subtly contrasting spaces of texture and slickness, light and shadow, space and confinement. These thoughtful studies in subtle contrasts achieve a pale quiet which firmly invites unhurried inspection. If one had to choose a single word to summarize, it would be special. Extra-special.
Many of the pieces dance airily in sets or alone atop dark, weighty plinths. Cups and vases pair textures of toughness like diamond plate or OSB plywood alongside smoothly precious traditional glazes. These slight tensions whisper not scream, compelling handling and attention up close, and receding into pure elegance with distance.
The show includes a wide variety of forms, all grounded in function. Cups and berry bowls, boxes textured like old barn wood, serving bowls, and vases are the most frequent forms. Many make an initial impression as sculptures that a second glance realizes could deliver substance.
Hopkins earned a BA in Liberal Studies with Studio Art & Photography Minors at Westchester University of Pennsylvania, and went on to earn an MFA in Ceramics at State University of New York, The College at New Paltz.
