Bonnie Seeman Workshop

Achieving a Beautiful Macabre

Bonnie Seeman leads this three day, hands-on workshop focused on altering and combining thrown forms to create complex functional vessels. Bonnie's elegant pots are known for their ornate forms and lavishly embellished surfaces. Using basic wheel-thrown parts, participants will spend the majority of the workshop experimenting with a variety of handbuilding and decorating techniques for combining multiple elements.

Bonnie will demonstrate using porcelain, however these techniques are applicable to any throwable clay body. Participants will explore a variety of surface treatments including drawing into wet clay, carving, stamping, and applying slip. Bonnie will also review surface decoration and firing techniques with the group. Participants will learn to incorporate anatomical and botanical elements in heavily altered functional forms, an approach that allows Bonnie to achieve a combination of the macabre and beautiful.

The group will have access to wheels for limited periods each day to generate parts for handbuilding with. Some throwing experience is necessary.

Class size 18.

Bonnie Seeman Artist Statement

I am very interested in the utilitarian object and how it can be used as a means of narration. My work blends the macabre with the beautiful, which acts as a metaphor for the fragility and resiliency of life. By using my interest in morphology and anatomy I present the viewer with a detailed examination of the living structures of the natural world. The juxtaposition of the botanical and anatomical elements can simultaneously be jarring, disquieting, and beautiful. This dichotomy also enhances the tactile quality of the work enticing personal interaction with the viewer. While producing my work, these elements weigh on my mind until a peace reaches its fruition.
