Becky and Steve Lloyd
Becky and Steve Lloyd collaborate on carved porcelain work. They use the subtractive process of sgraffito on delicate porcelain to create a synthesis between surface and form. The porcelain vessels are hand thrown, coated with a terra sigillata, and then carved over the entire surface. Their designs of trees, leaves, and plants are very delicate and ever evolving. Their work is influenced by motifs from textiles, wood cuts, arts and crafts period pieces, and the vast details in nature.
Becky & Steve Lloyd Artist Statement
We use the subtractive process of sgraffito on delicate porcelain to create a synthesis between surface and form. Our porcelain vessels are hand thrown, coated with a terra sigilatta, and then carved when the coating is dry. The work is then fired at 2300 degrees Fahrenheit to make the porcelain vitreous. Our designs or trees, leaves, and plants are very delicate as they envelope the entire surface of the vessels from rim to foot. These pieces are hand - carved and no two pieces are identical. The patterns are ever evolving as new images and ideas present themselves. It is important for us to convey an interest in the most minute detail of each vessel. The work is influenced by a fascination with motifs from textiles, wood cuts, arts and crafts period pieces and the vast details in nature.
Becky and Steve Lloyd collaborate on this carved porcelain work. Steve concentrates on creating graceful forms on the potters wheel from the finest high temperature porcelain. Becky designs the patterns and uses sharp tipped metal tools to carve the black terra sigilatta coating to expose the white porcelain. Collaboration between the carved designs and the form of the pots is an ongoing challenge. Becky and Steve have been making pots side by side for over twenty years since meeting at Beloit College in Wisconsin.
