Arthur González Workshop

Sculpting Inside-Out

Arthur González leads a three day, hands-on workshop where participants learn to make believable heads and hands. Arthur will teach the "Inside-Out" method for sculpting the figure. Dark, somber and foreboding, Arthur González's works encourage serious deliberation and reflection on the relationship between personal concerns and world issues.

Concentrating on the portrait bust as a format, participants will learn how to depict advanced facial emotions through an understanding of the asymmetricality of the face and upper body. Arthur will discuss the foundations of the portrait from the Renaissance concepts to color theory through the inventions of the Impressionists. Participants will be guided in turning the secret questions we ask ourselves and and off-balance answers we tend to create into the stuff of art.

Arthur González Bio

Arthur González received his Masters of Fine Arts degree at University of California, Davis in 1981 under Robert Arnesoin and Manuel Neri. He is an internationally exhibited artist with over thirty-five one-person shows in the last twenty-five years, including seven in New York City. He has received many awards including the Virginia Groot Foundation twice and is an unprecedented four-time recipient of the National Endowment of the Arts Grant within a ten-year period. He is a Professor of Art at the California College of the Arts (formerly CCAC).

Arthur González Artist Statement

There were the bodies seven and the
spirits four
Which my instructor frequently
rehearsed;
Among the spirits quicksilver came first
And orpiment came second, then he
passed
To sal ammoniac and brimstone last.
As for the seven bodies I should mention,
Here they all are, if they are worth
attention:
Gold for the sun and silver for the moon,
Iron for Mars and quicksilver in tune
With Mercury, lead which prefigures
Saturn
And tin for Jupiter. Copper takes the
Pattern
Of Venus if you please! This cursed trade
Robs one of all the money one has made
And all one spends on it or round

A Letter to My Friends:

From inner ears with cartoon eyes, and white fire disguised as snow, to tattooed skin with upside-downed words that pay homage to Lorca and Chaucer. Disparate by nature, horse tail, rope, gold leafed hair, scrimshawed bone, invertebrates with silicone, all come together in cahoots with the protagonist's intention of explaining a question or pondering a memory.

From girls deep in thought, and grown-up women deep in the abyss, to young men with their young unconsciousness hip deep in the unknown and open books that can whisper anything. The figures are archetypes who interact with hybrid personal symbols. These are parts of the aesthetic recipe that hopes to incarnate the intangibles in and out of the studio.

Formally, the work is often positioned off-center which creates visual duality through established devises first influenced by Roman hieratic order. Other times the work is in precipitous compositions which creates, through physical tension, a sense of drama and emotion. The subjects explored dictate the work's physical structure and the elements within the structure comprise the anatomy of an idea.

Today, outside, there is a string of dualities, contradictions, hierarchies and preferences; we are in control of some and hope for the "happy accident" for the others. With this in mind, the work surrounds the simple questions we ask ourselves in secret and the complex and off-balance answers we tend to create. These daily collaborations with life's events are the stuff of art, and gives us the opportunity to access the bricoleur within us all.
